“A Voice Undefeated” a new book by Collin Raye

The last time Collin Raye, the well-known country crooner, played Cape Girardeau it was 1993 at the SEMO District Fair.  He was just coming off his biggest establishing hit at that time from 1992 “Love Me” which hit #1 on the country charts for 3 weeks, off his freshman album “All I Can Be.” When asked about his memories of Cape, Collin states “That was right next to the Mississippi river wasn’t it? They had a nice bandstand at the (SEMO District) fair and that was a fun packed crowd.”

Since that time Raye racked up a total of 24 top ten records and 15 more #1 hits plus being nominated for the Male Vocalist of the Year 10 times (5 ACM and 5 CMA).   Also along the way he dealt with more than his fair share of tragedy and loss.

In his newly released book “A Voice Undefeated” Raye takes the reader along with them on his musical, personal and professional journey like an old friend that he is confiding in.  The book starts off with a glowing forward from the former Governor of Arkansas Mike Huckabee, but after that it knocks the wind out of you by recounting the funeral of Collin’s nine-year-old granddaughter Haley.  After that the book flows in more of a chronological and event driven timeline opening with his childhood in a virtual fatherless home, where his mother became the guiding force for him and his brother.  He also discusses how he was raised in a musical family, his mother once opened for Elvis, so music was always around him from a very early age.  Truth be told Raye wanted to be a Rock Star growing up (especially after seeing Foghat “Live” in concert), but fate took him down another path.  The chapters take you through his personal life as his wife and newborn son cling to life and it takes you through his glories days and the eventual fall.  Through all of this the two common threads that remain are Raye’s faith and love of music, both of which have seen him through to the other side.

Raye is an admitted man of faith and not afraid to tell you so in person, just as he speaks freely about his feelings of what is called Country Music today.  “A Voice Undefeated” reflects a man who has had it all, lost it all and come through the other side ready for what is ahead of him.  If you’re a fan of Musician Autobiographies, as I am, I think you’ll enjoy this intimate insight into Collin Raye’s continued journey.  Besides being a well-crafted and written book you’ll also find a DVD on the back sleeve that contains an interview and “Live” performances.  He is also currently touring on his latest album release “Still on the Line” a tribute to one of his mentors Glen Campbell. If you don’t find the book at our local book stores you can find it on Amazon or at collinraye.com.

Raye is also schedule to appear in the area again on August 9 at Campbell Community Center in Campbell, MO. Find more details about his tour here.
