New Year Sees New Building at Southeast River Campus

Art students were ready to start the 2014-15 school year, especially with the new River Campus expansion in place. The River Campus dorm opened its doors for this school year and it really makes that side of campus feel like they now have their own personal conservatory.

St. Vincent’s Commons is great for all the students studying at the River Campus. The name comes from the history of the location, and when building the new River Campus addition they saved the original sign for the St. Vincent’s College. You can see the history when you walk into the building with the original brick from the hand-ball court greeting you with all the carved names still intact. Soon they plan to put a full brick sculpture of the students at work right outside the dining area.

The structure itself matches the old seminary building with the window details and the tower at the inner corner of the building. There is now a quad campus layout for students to enjoy. This new facility though is much more. It offers brand new classrooms for music ensembles, art students, and dancers, as well as practice rooms for students on every floor. Faculty members have received new office spaces with easy access for students, affording them the opportunity to walk right down a hallway to talk to their professors rather than having to go around. For security, only the faculty and students have access through these doors with their keycards.

The dorm portion of the building is definitely something to brag about. With a comfortable hotel lobby feel in the student lounges, practice rooms in their halls, and a laundry facility on both floors, students have all they need.

The lounge area on each floor of the dorm features a high-tech, luxurious kitchen, pool tables, and easy access entertainment. There is also a full workout room on each floor for students to use, which is convenient since the Rec Centers are so far away. Something different from other dorms is the full kitchenette in every room shared with four students (2 in each bedroom). It has cabinet space, a full size refrigerator, and a microwave. The view students have from their lounge is one of the best parts, though. Whether you are relaxing or studying, the rooms have a great view of the river, park, and bridge. The commons also include a full dining area with everything you need including breakfast, home-cooked food, and salads.

Included in the new facility is a great directing studio that currently has the stage for the upcoming performance Hairspray mapped out on its floor. Practices are underway and cast and crew are rehearsing almost every night. With this new building they have all the space they need. The singing, acting, and dancing by the students and adult volunteers is sure to entertain.

Director Dr. Kenn Stilson is working hard to get students ready for their Oct. 8-11 performances at 7:30 p.m., as well as a showing on Oct. 12 at 2:00 p.m., all located at the Donald C. Bedell Performance Hall. Tickets cost $20/17. Purchase SEMO Hairspray tickets here.
