Behind the Float

By Emily Sladek

Not only does Homecoming bring out the community to cheer for the hometown team, but it also gives fraternities, sororities, and groups a chance to bond with each other.

Alpha Chi Omege and Sigma Phi Epsilon teamed up with their 70s theme in hand. Their approach was simple, albeit common: make the best float. The groups' Homecoming chair Nikki Voumard commented, "The theme was 70's fads and events, so we decided that disco was a staple of the 70's. We came up with the board designs and then built around that, adding the disco theme and glitter all around. With the little details we used other fads and events."

The process kicked off in the beginning of October. With recruiting for their respective sorority and fraternity barely behind them, they brainstormed their ideas. Their design was a blend of everyone's thoughts, and they joined together to decide what would go on top of the float as well.

Coordinating people to work on something so intricate is no easy task, especially when you are dealing with approximately a hundred people. Sleeping and studying may have fallen to the wayside as the preparations were made in order for the float to be ready. Each member contributed 5 hours a week, tediously pomping and building to make their vision for the float a reality. Alyssa Wedemeyer, Alpha Chi Omega member, said "I like pomping. It's a good way to get closer to your sisters and meet the fraternities. It's kind of a stress reliever too." She also appreciated the fact that it took away some of the worry of studying all the time.

Though some rumor of change is floating in the air about what will and will not be allowed next year, the groups were satisfied with their final outcome. Their social media sites send thanks to each other for making Homecoming 2013 fun.
