The Crisp Museum Offers Something for Everyone

SEMO River CampusThe Crisp Museum isn't just for Southeast students. From elementary school children, to adults who need a creative outlet, the museum provides a wide range of services and activities for the entire community.

The Crisp Museum is still a rather new addition to the River Campus, opened in its current location in 2007, but it has had a large impact on the community. Crisp is not only a museum where Missouri history and amazing artwork are displayed, it also provides an important service spreading a love and education for art and history – not just to Southeast students but anyone who has an interest.

The Southeast Explorer is one of these services. The bus-like automobile is a teaching and learning center that travels all over the region to local schools, serving a 25-county area. They give elementary students a chance to come inside and glimpse the history that they might otherwise not be able to see at the museum, all for free.

The Explorer is wheelchair accessible, and inside there are computers, display cases full of artifacts, and a television for educational videos. They rotate the theme of the explorer from Native American artifacts to ‘NASA: Spirit of Discovery’. The fun exterior was designed by Troy Guzman of St. Louis.

Back inside the Crisp Museum it’s not only school children who get to learn new things. Crisp often hosts workshop events anyone can attend. Last October was their Plein Air Workshop, in which students learned to paint landscape outside, drawing inspiration from the Mississippi River and the natural beauty of Cape County North Park. They also have summer art academies for kids, and Adult Art Workshops that teach painting and bookmaking.

From education to contests, Crisp offers the community a chance to learn art, and to even showcase their work. This is an important service to anyone who has a love for art and needs a place to stretch their artistic muscles.
