Christmas Country Church Tour 2014

Country Church TourTake a breather, get away from the traffic of town, and hustle of the malls by taking the Christmas Country Church Tour. Churches in the surrounding areas are decking their halls, bringing out the carols, and pouring some warm cocoa to share with the hundreds of visitors that come each year to see the beautiful historic church buildings.

Christmas time can get busy when you’re trying to buy presents, bake goodies, and get everything decorated. The Christmas Country Church Tour offers a chance to escape from some of the stress and visit the quiet countryside to see some of the beautiful churches Missouri has to offer. Churches throughout Cape, Perry, and Bollinger counties will be in their Sunday best, decorated in Christmas flare for everyone to enjoy. Snacks, refreshments, and carolers will be there as well, adding some classic holiday joy.

The tour is free, and all are welcome. Some of the churches will be holding special services for the event, and are excited to show off their lights, greenery, and themed Christmas trees with everyone who comes. It’s not only decorations that draw a crowd, but the charm of the ancient sanctuaries as well; some of the buildings date back several generations, the Apple Creek Presbyterian for example is 178 years old. Brazeau Presbyterian, built in 1854, still has some of the original pews, and on their balcony remains the etchings left from slaves who attended the church.

The decorating is all done by church officials and volunteers. Some keep it simple, other’s go all out, draping their alters in lights, and taking advantage of the high ceilings with towering trees. And of course, there’s always a nativity scene.

If you live in one of the participating towns be sure to stop by, or take the whole tour, any order will do. Enjoy food and song with friends, pick out your favorite decorations, and have a fun time with a classic holiday tradition.

This year the Tour is December 18 and 19, from 3:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. For more information, a map, and a list of participating churches click here.
