This Valentine’s Day, (Saturday, February 14 in case you’ve forgotten) you may want to consider taking your special someone downtown to Port Cape Girardeau for a bit of soothing blues. In its fourth year, the 2015 Cross Rivers Blues Festival is establishing itself as a heritage event in Cape. This year’s headliners include the rockin’ rhythm and blues of The Bel Airs hailing from Columbia, MO. Hometown favorites include the Ivas John Band, with special guest Gary Gordon of Sparta IL, the healing blues of Bruce Zimmerman and the Water St. Band, and the incendiary vocal styling of Big Larry Williams. Ivas John expressed great excitement for the event, “We’ve pretty much sold-out every year and we’re hoping to do the same this year!”
John’s has been playing regular gigs at Port Cape for seven or eight years (with his full band on Sundays and acoustic nights on Thursdays), and the close relationship that he achieved with Doc Cain helped forge the plans for the first festival which was held in 2011. John says, “Port Cape is really the perfect venue for this kind of event with its big dance floor, nice stage, and view of the river. It’s just a great place and the right setting to see a band.”
Although originally a Chicago, IL native, John made his way to Carbondale to attend SIU, then moved on to Cape Girardeau to follow his musical muse. John and his band have a strong local following. A new studio album is in the works for the Ivas John Band and it contains nine original songs and approximately four tribute cover tunes. John is recording this with his special guest at the festival, Gary Gordon, at his home studio in Sparta. The title of the new album is “The Country Blues Bouquet” and it’s currently scheduled for release in June of 2015. John will be on KRCU 90.9FM radio on the “Folk Connection” this coming Saturday at 7:00 p.m. to discuss the upcoming event.
If history repeats itself, as it is prone to do, you should probably buy your tickets for the Cross Rivers Blues Festival in advance to secure your spot. The doors open at 6:00 p.m. and the music and festivities will commence at 7:00 p.m. Tickets purchased in advance are only $15 per person and can be acquired at Port Cape, Hempies, or Shivelbines Music. If they are still available tickets may also be purchased at the door for $18 each, and seating is first-come-first-serve. An appetizer buffet is also included in the price of the ticket and will be open all evening. The 2015 Cross Rivers Blues Festival is sponsored by Port Cape Girardeau Restaurant and Lounge, and iLuvLocalPlaces. The festival is coming to Historic Downtown Cape Saturday February 14th. This Valentine’s Day, getting the blues is a good thing!
