The Summer Arts Festival at the River Campus in Cape Girardeau is having its second year, and the twos keep coming with double the entertainment, double the classes, and double the fun.
This all-day festival will have plenty of art not just for viewing, but interacting. Not only can you come see vendors but there are dancing classes, stage combat, workshops, sidewalk art, stage performances, live music, and so much more, all completely free and open to the public. “Our goal is for all ages and economic backgrounds to come watch and create art,” says organizer Rhonda Weller-Stilson.
New attractions to the festival include a writing workshop, a plein air competition, and a car show, “the car show is full of hot rods and muscle cars, but it focuses more on the art aspect of the vehicles,” said Rhonda. Several new community booths will be accompanying the traditional art booths this year as well.
The festival also marks the opening of Seussical the Musical, which will be performed in the Wendy Kurka Rust Flexible Theatre. This live play combines the works of Dr. Seuss into one big performance, including The Grinch and Horton Hears a Who. Unlike the festival Seussical the Musical does require a ticket which can be purchased at the box office.
Rhonda hopes that the Summer Arts Festival will become a tradition in the community, “There’s nothing else really like this, the festival is unique in that it celebrates all the arts, brings them all together.”
But more importantly she just wants to see everyone have a great time, “My payoff is seeing all the smiling faces.”
