Saturday, July 21, 2012 marks the 3rd Annual Hoops for Life and this year will be even bigger and better. Many of us remember that in 2007 Sahara "Hoops" Aldridge lost her battle with a brainstem tumor, and while her battle was lost, the fight will go on.
Sahara’s parents Shannon and Amy Aldridge have spent countless hours fighting the battle for names they may not even know. However, if you ask them they are just coordinators to this amazing event, the hero’s are the folks who pledge their time and beat the heat to join their cause.
This year Hoops for Life is going beyond what they or anyone else expected, when I spoke to Shannon he said “I have seen races elsewhere that are huge, and I want to bring that to this community.” Not only is the race getting some extra rewards, but truly from someone who has ran the race for the past 2 years, no extra rewards are needed. This year they have announced that on the evening of the race Rick Springfield will be returning to Cape Girardeau in Sahara’s Honor and to help raise money for this great cause. You may recall Rick made a special appearance in 2008 at Buckner Brewing Company, but this time you will have your chance to see him in the beautiful Bedell Perfomance Hall at the River Campus.
All proceeds from these events go directly to pediatric cancer research in memory of Sahara "Hoops" Aldridge.
To register for the Hoops for Life 5K visit their website and while this is a Tough Race for a Tough Cause this race is open to all ages and all levels. When you run or walk for such a good cause everyone is a winner.
For tickets to see Rick Springfield Live at Bedell Perfomance hall visit the River Campus’s website and look for the Hoops for Life Benefit Concert.
In 2010, over 325 proud supporters hit the street in Sahara’s honor, last year the numbers were around 500, and this year can you imagine the possibilities. We may have not known Sahara personally, and some may have never heard her sweet story, but somewhere some time we will know some little girl or little boy that is battling this battle. This could be your way of giving back to this tough cause in a fun way!
