What’s in a name? A lot if your town is named after one of the most famous comic book cities in history. Metropolis Illinois might not have official ties to Superman, but they have a reputation to uphold sharing the same name as the superhero’s famous city, and what’s better than a weekend all about the cultural icon?
One of the big tourist attractions in Metropolis is their 15-foot Superman statue in Superman Square. This is where it all starts once the Superman Celebration begins. The weekend will be filled with celebrity guests, a film festival, and of course dozens of super men and women filling the streets.
Familiar celebrity faces will be at the celebration like Diane Sherry, the original Lana Lang from ‘Superman’. Other heros of the DC universe will be present as well, including actress Candice Patton from ‘The Flash’, and Caity Lotz from ‘Arrow’. There will also be several comic book artists and writers, comedian Scott Long, and so much more.
One of the biggest events of the weekend is the Fan Film Festival, a competition that looks at superhero-themed short videos, both ameteur and professional, from around the world. This year dozens of entries have been submitted, featuring comedies, animation, and drama that provide unique interpretations of what makes a superhero.
It’s just not a superhero convention without a costume contest. Everyone is invited to dress as any hero they want and participate in the Parade of Characters down Market Street, the contest will have awards for four different categories. You super villains beware of the rules though, costumes must be family friendly, and no real weapons are allowed.
For those who like to dress up as Superman as well as possess his super strength there will also be a road race, and a bike ride. If you prefer to watch the action from the sidelines there will be a bicycle stunt show, and a performance by Tony Hoard and the K-9 crew who will put Krypto to shame with acrobatic tricks and stunts.
All this and more await the most dedicated of Superman fans, comic lovers, and aspiring superheroes. Check it all out on their website. The Superman Celebration takes place June 11-14 in Metropolis Illinois.
