Homebrewing is steadily becoming a favorite pastime of beer-lovers and connoisseurs of fine ales. It allows anyone to experiment with their favorite flavors and create the perfect concoction. Minglewood Brewery in Cape wants local homebrewers of every skill level to bring their favorite brew out of the garage and onto the public palate with the Winter Warmer Homebrew Contest.
Stuart Matthews, the event organizer and owner of Minglewood says that the contest is a way to bring the homebrewing community together, “the contest gets homebrewers involved and gives them a reason to brew. I wanted to give them an opportunity to showcase their creations.”
The contest is for Imperial Stouts only. Not only can anyone enter, but as a unique change the public will be the judges. “We’ll set the entries on the bar and everyone will get to taste and rate them on a scale of zero to ten,” Stuart said. The top ten finalists will then go to a panel of Minglewood judges who will determine the winner. Stuart adds that the contest is completely anonymous.
The winner will work with Minglewood brewer Tony Johnson to create a collaborative Imperial Stout brew. Their creation will be available on tap with the winner’s name. “The winner will have the opportunity to brew on a large system. Most homebrewers work with five to ten gallons, ours is about two hundred and ten. Their name will also go on the ale, we want to give them some notoriety.”
Stuart also wants the contest to bring the homebrewing community together, “People come as far as Poplar Bluff and Sainte Genevieve. It’s a very welcoming community, and everyone can geek out together.”
The Winter Warmer will be an annual event, with the possibility of a second contest in the spring.
The Winter Warmer takes place November 14 with a cornhole tournament at 11 a.m. and beer judging at 1 p.m. at Minglewood Brewery.
