Back to School Sales Tax Holiday

by Becky Davenport

This weekend kicks off probably the second biggest shopping weekend of the year! It is the most wonderful time of the year Back to School Time and here is how you can save a few extra bucks while getting ready for everyone to return to school. At 12:01 Friday August 3 until midnight on Sunday August 5th we celebrate Sales Tax Holiday!

How Sales Tax Holiday Works

The sales tax holiday applies to state and local taxes, unless the local area chooses not to participate, if the local area does not participate State Sales Tax is still exempt. In our local area Bollinger, Iron, St Francois, Ste Genevieve, and Stoddard counties are not participating. A complete list of non-participant counties is available here. However, even if the county has chosen to participate a city or town can also opt out of participating, for a list of non-participating cities please visit here.

What is Tax Exempt?

The sales tax exemption is limited to clothing, school supplies, computer software, personal computers, and computer peripheral devices not exceeding $3500.00. These categories cover a broad amount of necessities, for example any article of wearing apparel including footwear, but does not include accessories like watches, scarves, or headbands. Majority of school supplies are included in the holiday like book bags, calculators, art supplies, and more. However, merchandise like CD players, headphones, sporting equipment and office equipment is not. Check here for a complete list of what is and what is not included in the Sales Tax Holiday.

Things to remember

There are price limits and dollar amounts that qualify and do not qualify. An article of clothing cannot exceed the taxable value of one $100. School supplies are limited to $50 per purchase, but you can make multiple purchases. Computer software cannot exceed the taxable amount of $350 and personal computers or devices cannot exceed $3500. If you have more questions visit here.
While you are probably like me and already making your mental list of what all the kid’s need many of the stores have school supply list at the front of the stores. You can also find that several of the schools have posted them online for Cape Girardeau School District visit here and select your school.
