The New Year invites us to look to the future with bright prospects, but it’s also a chance to look back on the fun memories of the past year and reminisce on the good times we’ve had, and the good times to come.
2015 was full of amazing events, and brand new experiences. We hosted the first annual Mardi Gras Masquerade party, bringing the fun of New Orleans to Cape Girardeau. It was a great success, and we’re hoping to make the 2016 Mardi Gras celebration bigger and better.
In January Dan Steadman came to Cape Girardeau to direct his independent film Love Chronicles (of the Cape) in which residents got a moment in the spotlight with one hundred speaking parts. Steadman invited all locals to appear as extras and actors for a chance to capture small town life.
Several new businesses opened in Cape this year. New restaurants like The Milk and Honey Cafe, and 36 Restaurant brought unique new tastes to town. On Cue Performing Arts Studio appeared downtown and has been filling the city with dance and music ever since. Coin Op Cantina was also a new arrival, combining video games and the bar scene in one fun location.
Even in the heat of summer everyone was ready to run for a good cause. Hoops for Life raised enough money for the pediatric brain tumor research program at Lucile Packard Children’s Hospital in Stanford University to open a new facility and make special breakthroughs in research, including a new, low-toxicity therapy.
Several anniversaries were celebrated this year, with 20 years at the Shawnee Hills Wine Trail in Southern Illinois, 75 years at Arena Park for the Semo Fair, and 70 years of Christmas magic with Hutson’s Fine Furniture.
In October ghost hunter Greg Myers took us on a supernatural adventure into the haunted underbelly of Southeast Missouri, and taught us that even skeptics can believe.
The holidays were made a little brighter this year with the debut of the Jackson Holiday Extravaganza. The Jackson City Park was decked out in lights, filling the Hubble Creek Bridge and trees in the park for a beautiful walk through. Next year they hope to have even more lights to enjoy.
Now 2016 is upon us, and we can't wait to see the surprises the new year has in store. If you're looking for a way to celebrate visit our New Year's Eve Directory for events. See you in 2016!
