The new Executive Director of the Cape Girardeau Convention and Visitors Bureau started her first day on the job on Monday. Brenda Newbern is starting strong in her new role, and hopes to make a big influence in Cape tourism.
Newbern said that her main focus will be on Cape’s sport image, “We are a sports town . . . with the new sports complex we’ll have a wide range of shows to offer, and we can combine it with other venues keep a continuous flow of sports events.”
With the soccer fields at the Osage Center, and volleyball at the Show Me Center, Newbern hopes the new sports complex - which is still in the planning stages - will bring in more basketball tournaments, as well as other sports that will help keep Cape’s calendar full, “sports shows attract people and will impact our economy.”
Aside from increasing Cape’s sport culture, Newbern also wants to use Cape’s growing hospitality industry to attract more organizations, saying that with new hotels there’s plenty of space to bring more conferences to town, “I’m trying to apply my previous job experience with our sales team to make sure things go as necessary as possible, and everyone has the tools they need to get businesses to come to Cape.”
Even though she only has a couple of days under her belt Newbern said the new experience as Executive Director has been wonderful, “I’ve joined a team that’s really moving, and continues to move forward . . . I’m just getting a feel for the department and improving on what’s already a really good base.”
