The Gallery of Inspiration has been a staple in the Cape art community since 2008, and is close to several people’s hearts, not just as another stop on the First Friday trail, but as a place for therapy and healing.
The Gallery of Inspiration is partnered with the Community Counseling Center, and provides some of their patients with a place to express themselves creatively. The Gallery of Inspiration’s Director Beverly Northcutt says art is therapeutic for mental illness, “We’re not an official program, but we do help with mental illness. It’s good to have something to express yourself.”
The gallery hosts free classes and workshops for patients of the C.C.C., which in turn acts as a sponsor by providing art supplies for the students. Beverly says they learn art through a variety of mediums including painting, photography, and paper mache sculptures.
“Most of our artists never had lessons, so we provide classes to sharpen their skills,” Beverly explained, adding that this month they were learning how to paint portraits.
Dr. Sharon Braun of the Community Counseling Center confirmed the gallery’s benefit to the patients, “[Art] is very therapeutic, people can get into the art and forget everything else. It’s very fulfilling.”
As an added support the artists keep all the profit from any work they sell at the gallery.
“The community has been very accepting,” Beverly said of the patrons who visit the gallery, “it helps us fight the stigma of mental illness.”
Above all the gallery seeks to help the minds, hearts, and skills of those who face mental illness, and provide a sanctuary of creativity for anyone who wishes to learn how to use art as a step on the road to recovery.
The Gallery of Inspiration accepts donations in the form of art supplies, and its classes are open to the general public for a small fee of $5. (Fee is waived for C.C.C. artists.) Visit the Gallery of Inspiration at 5 N. Main St. in Cape. Learn more on their website at www.galleryofinsperation.org
