Boom! Pow! Area Shops Ready for Free Comic Book Day

Stock image: creative commonsIn preperation for Free Comic Book Day, coming nationally on May 7, we’re taking a look at all the local comic book stores in the area so patrons know just the place to pick up their free comics and support our local shops!

 

In Jackson, Missouri Kapow Comic Zone has made a splash with its first year in business. They offer a wide variety of old and new comics, as well as games and toys. They hold Magic: The Gathering games every Friday where players can join for fun, or keep their stats online.

While Cape Girardeau lost its independent comic book stores, Snap Keep Gaming is a new face in town that offers shopping and tournaments. patrons can practice their spell-casting with games like Magic: The Gathering.

Castle Perilous Games is a famous name from Carbondale, Illinois. Along with comics, graphic novels, and manga they also sell games, toys, and memorabilia. They have weekly tabletop game plays as well, with a variety of card and board games to satisfy any adventurer. Players can try something new every week. For Free Comic Book Day Castle Perilous will be throwing a party! There will be pastries and cookies for those waiting in line, and if you bring five cans of food to donate you'll receive an extra comic. Special guests include the Southern Illinois Steampunk Society, Southern Illinois Roller Girls, and puppies from the local Humane Society!  Matt Millar of Capybara Ink will also be there creating custom sketches!

Located in Poplar Bluff, Ken’s Comic-Man prides itself on fresh comics and new issues every week of the most popular superheros, as well as classics. Want to read Iron Man from the very beginning? How about Scooby-Doo and the gang taking on the apocalypse? Ken’s promises something for everybody.

Hour of the Dragon in Sikeston is the perfect place to get your game on. Explore the world of Dungeons and Dragons, defeat your friends in Magic: The Gathering, or join the Arkham Horror League, along with a variety of card games and board games. For comic books visit their designated comic shop in Dexter: Q’s Comics!

Fox Comics and Games is located in Marion, Illinois. Patrons can shop comics and manga as well as play games like Heroclix and Munchkin - Fox Comics loves their games so much that sometimes they offer over two different games and tournaments in one night, almost every day of the week.

Whether you like to read the latest superhero excursion, or be the hero yourself on the table top, there are plenty of independent comic book stores to spark your imagination. Visit your local shop May 7 for free comics, new games, and plenty of adventure.
