It’s vacation season - a chance to get away and relax, but with costs, long drives, and tourist traps full of tacky souvenirs it’s easy for a vacation to lose its luster. Luckily you can find all the amenities for a perfect vacation right here at home.
For those needing a low-cost, low-travel vacation, start planning for one right here in the region. First thing’s first - pampering. You’ve had a long year, it’s time for some self-love. Visit the spa for whatever you need to work out the kinks and feel great. Relax with a massage at Eden, detox in the sauna at Karen Oliver & Co., or get a pedicure to match your sandals at Renaissance Beauty Academy.
Vacations aren’t complete without a trip to the pool. If it’s just you, cool off during one of Cape Splash’s adult swim days on select Fridays. If the kids are coming along, try out Hydro Adventures in Poplar Bluff, not only do they have a water park, but go karts, mini golf, an arcade, and more. If you prefer to stay out of the sun visit the SEMO recreation center in Cape, they have a lap pool for exercise, and a hot top to relax in afterwards.
Swimming pools are great, but maybe you’re longing to just lay out on the beach and enjoy the ocean sounds. The midwest may not be close to any ocean, but there are plenty of lakes to give you that sea-side experience. Wappapello offers plenty of outdoor activities with lake-side ‘beaches,’ woodland hiking, and even boat rental. Clearwater Lake in Piedmont is also a great recreational location in the summer.
For some, cutting loose means a glass of wine. Wineries and vineyards in the area offer great drinks, live music, and good food - all in a relaxing, country-side atmosphere. Go explore the Mississippi River Hills Wine Trail, the Shawnee Hills Wine Trail in Illinois, or the famous Route Du Vin in Sainte Genevieve.
Now that you’re relaxed it’s time to have some fun! Test your swing or play some mini golf at Arena Golf in Cape. Or go party Downtown - venues like the Isle, Rude Dog Pub, and Rhymer’s on the Plaza have live music to enjoy every weekend, and there are plenty of free, outdoor concerts in the area to enjoy as well. Learn a new dance with Cape Ballroom, go fishing, zip line, or take a picnic and a paperback to the park and kick back.
Make the most of summer vacation by making the most of what you have right here in the region.
