This year the Jackson Homecomers event celebrates 108 years with carnival rides, live music, and a week of fun.
The Jackson Homecomers event is a very longstanding tradition for the city of Jackson. This year all the fun returns with five days of carnival rides, games, and food, along with live music, vendors, and nightly prizes.
On Tuesday the carnival opens with a special $1 discount on all rides. The Jackson Municipal Band will perform, with Barefoot on Sunday to follow. At 10 p.m. there will be an attendance drawing at the American Legion. Bring the kids on this night because children ages 3 to 17 will receive a free corndog, and 5 ride tickets which can be used any time during the week. This is courtesy of the Optimist Club - patrons can pick up the food and tickets at their table.
At 6:30 p.m. there will be a 1-mile youth race, and a 5K at 7 p.m. hosted by the Parks and Recreation Department.
Wednesday is gospel night with the Baird family and Reflections. There will also be a bingo game throughout the evening with prizes.
Thursday is for the carnival ride lovers - buy an armband for $20 and get unlimited access to all the rides. Elvis (portrayed by Don Hester) will take the stage, followed by the Bittersweet band.
On Friday the Stooge Band will be performing, and Saturday will end the celebration with live music by Immaculate Conception Church Choristers, Southern Harmony, and Manitou. There will also be a tribute to Korean War veterans, and an attendance drawing.
Event volunteer Beverly Koehler says that the Jackson Homecomers has been a long-time tradition for the community, “It started over one hundred years ago to celebrate the new courthouse. It’s one of the few carnivals still in a city street. We have a stage in front of the courthouse for live music. There are rides, food, and games. No charge to get in. It’s a big event and a good crowd.”
Jackson Homecomers takes place July 26 - 30, 2016 from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. each night. Learn more on the website.
