Some say you have to have a healthy diet to go with exercise, but Minglewood Brewery in Cape Girardeau says you can have your pizza and eat it too with their new bi-weekly bike ride event.
Minglewood has teamed up with Cyclewerx to create the Minglewerx/Cyclewood Bike Ride. This fun activity invites anyone to join in for a group ride through Downtown Cape every other Tuesday. Cyclists meet at the Boardman Pavilion on Main Street (across from Hutson’s Fine Furniture) at 5:30 p.m. with the Velo Girardeau Group who will lead cyclists on a casual ride through Downtown.
Velo Girardeau is a local bicycle group that meet periodically for shared bike rides. Steve Gerard, a member of Velo Girardeau, says it’s a great combination. “Bikes and beer go together well, after the ride of course.” Steve says Velo Girardeau meets every Tuesday for a bicycle ride, and they partnered up with Minglewood to increase participation and have refreshments afterward.
Each ride lasts for 15-20 minutes, eventually ending at Minglewood Brewery where patrons can replenish those calories. Everyone receives a drink voucher for a beer, soda, or tea. As an added bonus one lucky rider will win a free pizza. Other bicycle-related giveaways will also take place.
Through the summer Velo Girardeau meets on Tuesdays and Thursdays, as well as Saturdays and Sundays. Members pick and choose when they ride and join up at meeting places for group rides. Steve says they’ll be enjoying the fall weather, but the schedule will change to Saturdays and Sundays only, weather-permitting, come winter.
“It’s an opportunity for group rides, which some people don’t have,” Steve said, “and there are lots of benefits to cycling - we take up less space than cars, it’s healthy . . . I can eat anything I want.”
Steve says that so far the Minglewerx/Cyclewood Bike Ride has been very successful, with 20-30 people showing up. All are invited to join in for a fun bicycle ride and pizza. The next ride is September 20 at 5:30 p.m. Meet at the Boardman Pavilion on Main Street.
