On your mark, get set, PLUNGE! The 11th annual Polar Plunge is coming up on Feb 4th, 2017 at Lake Boutin, Cape Girardeau. This fantastic event is designed to raise money for Special Olympics in an effort to support over 1,100 athletes competing in the events.
I had the pleasure of speaking with Development Director of Southeast Missouri Special Olympics, Penny Williams, to learn more about the Polar Plunge event. She said that this is the largest Special Olympics fundraising event . The fundraising event is designed to support the athletes to help cover the cost of travel and uniforms. The proceeds from the event give the Olympians an opportunity to participate just like any other athlete. Special Olympics is also the charity of choice for law enforcement. Not only do the members of law enforcement take the plunge, but they also medal the athletes and work in service of the organization all year long.
When I asked how this event started Penny laughed and said, "I didn't think we could get people in Southeast Missouri to jump in a lake!" That was eleven years ago, and the event is going stronger than ever - proving her motto of "Freezin for a Reason."
Want to get involved in the Polar Plunge? There are many ways you can get involved in this event! For those brave enough to jump in the icy waters you can form a new team or join an existing team. Click here for more info and registration requirements (http://give.somo.org/site/TR?fr_id=1081&pg=entry). Special Olympics allows participants to set up individual sites. You can check out the personal sites and help them raise money by donating to the teams or individuals. There is an interactive feature showing the leader boards for teams and participants.
Don't live in or near Cape Girardeau? The Feb 4th event is only 1 of 15 events happening in our region. You can sign up for an event or donate to a Plunger by clicking here (https://somo.org/plunge)
Is the thought of jumping in the cold water too much for you? Well as I learned in my chat with Penny - they are not going to let you out that easy! There is a place where you can support the cause if you are "Too Chicken to Plunge." (https://secure2.convio.net/somo/site/TRR/Plunge/General/2118769171?pg=ptype&fr_id=1081)
iluvlocalplaces will be on the scene snapping photos of what promises to be a genuinely entertaining event as we watch our neighbors, friends, and family members run into the chilly waters in funny costumes. The best part? Penny tells me that Special Olympian you are there to support will be right there waiting for you with a nice warm towel to dry off. It doesn't get any better than that!
See you all on February the 4th!
