March 29, 2014 marks the 3rd Annual P.R.O.M. (People Rising Over Muscular Dystrophy), put on by Trend Setters School of Cosmetology and State Beauty Supply. The event gives participants an opportunity to relive their high school prom while raising funds and awareness for the Muscular Dystrophy Association (MDA).
In its first year, P.R.O.M. was able to raise over $12,000, and the contributions went to travel expenses for a local Muscular Dystrophy patient and to a scholarship fund. Last year, donations for the Silent Auction and ticket sales helped raise over $10,000, and those contributions went to two local families with a cancer patient, as well as another scholarship fund. This year the funds raised will be given back to the MDA and the families affected.
The event is scheduled for Saturday, March 29th, 2014, from 7 p.m. to 11 p.m., at the Cape Elks Lodge. Tickets for the event are $25 each, and include hot appetizers (such as chicken drummettes and buffalo wings), dollar sandwiches (ham and chicken salad), various other food items, fun, and dancing. Tables of 8 may be reserved in advance for $240. Tickets may be purchased at Trend Setters School of Cosmetology, Inc., 573-335-9977, 835 S. Kingshighway, Cape Girardeau, MO 63703, or at State Beauty Supply, 573-334-8430, 615 Broadway St., Cape Girardeau, MO 63701.
While the event is Prom-themed, formal attire is not required. There is no need to rush to rent a tux or go digging in the closet for that old prom dress; dressy casual-attire is welcomed, too. During this adult prom, there will be a silent auction with all proceeds going to the Muscular Dystrophy Association. There are many cool items that have been donated for the silent auction including a combo fire pit and grill valued at $475. All money raised stays locally.
