Americans of all ages love the Fourth of July. As our nation's one completely American holiday, the Fourth is a day for fun. Whether you want to watch fireworks beneath a night sky, sink your teeth into fried chicken or barbeque burgers over a grill, there are plenty of ways to celebrate the Fourth of July. If you are looking for something to do this year, look no further for events specific to Southeast Missouri and Southern Illinois. There are so many celebrations and festivities going on, it’s hard to decide where to go and what to do.
Here is a list of things to do over this July 4th holiday:
Southern Illinois Happenings:
Carbondale, IL, July 4th. The city of Carbondale has announced the annual fireworks display will begin at 9 p.m. Friday, July 4, at the Carbondale SuperBlock, located behind University Mall. Attendees are encouraged to bring lawnchairs. Bleacher seating is available by the athletic fields and track. Concession stands will be open and restrooms will be available. No alcohol is permitted within the SuperBlock. Traffic will enter from South Lewis Lane with parking available for the first 300 vehicles. Additional parking will be available at Lewis School and Carbondale Middle School on East Grand Avenue and at Carbondale Community High School at the intersection of Giant City Road and West Walnut Street. Sports Blast Drive will not be open to through traffic.
*Private fireworks displays within the SuperBlock will not be permitted and citations may be issued.
4th of July Celebration at Fairview Park, Centralia.
Centralia, IL, July 1-4th. Carnival games and rides, food, entertainment. July 4th 9am Car and Motorcycle Show, 10am Veterans Parade, and Fireworks at dark. For more information call (618) 532-5910.
Salute to Freedom at Mt. Vernon Airport.
Mt. Vernon, IL, July 4th. Gates open at 5:30 p.m. Event includes a variety of food vendors, live entertainment, children's area, and a huge fireworks show at dusk. For more information call (618) 242-3151.
OLD FASHIONED JULY 4TH CELEBRATION
Mascoutah, IL, Friday, July 4, 2014 @ 4 pm Scheve Park, Harnett Street
This hometown celebration is held to encourage and strengthen the relationship between surrounding communities and the city. The event features softball and kickball tournaments, rides, kids games, good & drinks, raffle, poker, artisans, fireworks and more! Music provided by various local groups with the US Air Force Band of MidAmerica playing in the evening. Fireworks begin at 9:30 pm. Free admission. For more information call 618-281-5556.
INDEPENDENCE DAY CELEBRATION
Columbia, IL, July 4th. American Legion Memorial Park, 375 E. Locust Street. Grounds open at 11 am, Breakfast at Legion Hall at 9 am
The community of Columbia bands together to form the July Fourth Committee and puts on this Independence Day celebration that features food, beer, and other refreshments, bingo, a washer tournament, a Kloepper tournament, and other entertainment. Fireworks begin at dusk.
LIBERTY BELL OF THE WEST CELEBRATION
Kaskaskia, IL, July 4th. Kaskaskia Bell State Historic Site @11am-3pm.
This annual celebration takes place at the site of the Liberty Bell of the West, which was rung when Rogers Clark and his Long Knives captured Kaskaskia on July 4, 1778. A ceremony starts at 12:30 with speakers and the French Colonial Marines from nearby Fort de Chartres. The celebration also features live music, food and other refreshments, and the Church of the Immaculate Conception will be open for tours. This event is free.
Fireworks Display, Laser Show & SAFB Patriotic Music Concert
Downtown Public Square, Belleville, IL , July 5th
USAF MidAmerica Band, laser show, fireworks, 911 Memorial. Food/drink available for purchase. Bring lawn chairs/blankets. Music begins at 7:30pm.

Fourth of July Festivities
Murphysboro, IL, Friday, July 4th
Riverside Park, 24th and Commercial Streets
Each year Murphysboro's Riverside Park hosts one of the best fireworks displays in Southern Illinois. The fireworks start at dusk and are preceded by live entertainment on the stage of the historic shell in the evening. Free admission. For information call 618-684-3333
Anna, IL , Friday, July 4th
Fireworks start after Dusk. The community of Anna holds its annual fireworks display at Anna City Park.
4th of July
Steeleville, IL , July 2nd-4th
303 S. Chester, Steeleville, IL 62288. There will be a carnival and rides, food stands, live music and beer stand. Craft stands before and after parade in the American Legion. On the 4th there will be a 3k Firecracker Race at 9:00 a.m., parade at 10:00 a.m. and then fireworks at 10:00 p.m.
Du Quoin, IL, July 3rd at dusk
Show is Du Quoin State Fairgrounds and admission is free of charge.

Great American July 4th Firework Celebration
Cape Girardeau, MO, July 4th. 8pm-10pm
Fourth of July fireworks will return to Cape Girardeau’s downtown riverfront for 2014.Live music, “Spirit of America” presentation, and fireworks around 9:15 pm.
BIG BANG 5K RUN
Arnold, MO. Friday, July 4, 2014. 7 am@ Arnold Park, #1 Bradley Beach Road.
Big Bang 5K Run Against Hunger (and 1 Mile Fun Run/Walk) is back bigger and better in 2014! Set your 5K PR on this flat, fast course. Run the USATF measured blacktop course among the trees in beautiful Arnold Park. 5K Chip Timing by Fleet Feet Sports. There will be awards, prizes, and some amazing holiday/summer themed raffle baskets! All proceeds benefit Arnold Food Pantry, providing food and household necessities to persons in need in Arnold and nearby areas for 30 years.

City of Jackson Bicentennial and July 4th Celebration
Jackson, MO, July 4-5th @ Jackson City Park from 7am-10pm. Jackson City Park, N. High and W. Independence Streets.
The City of Jackson holds its annual July 4 celebration at Jackson City Park. Events start with a 5K walk and continue with a car show, live entertainment, Art in the Park, beer garden, and arts and crafts vendors. Fireworks begin at 9:30 pm. Free admission.
4th at the Fort
Fort D Historic Site, Cape Girardeau, MO on July 4th from 9am-3pm. For the four years of the Civil War, Fort D protected the city of Cape Girardeau from attack. Now the old fort comes to life once more. The soldiers of Fort D were very patriotic. At the national holiday, they would celebrate by firing their rifles and cannon, eating a special meal with friends and civilians, and flying their flags proudly. Come join eth re-enactors at this special time. The civilian ladies will be serving up iced tea (a true Civil War treat) and cookies. Free admission.
Perryville, MO , Friday, July 4, 2014 from 5 pm – dusk.
Courthouse Square, downtown Perryville. Enjoy live entertainment and family fun on the downtown square! Bring your lawn chairs and enjoy a relaxed evening in the cool shade of the trees on the beautiful Court House lawn. Free admission.
