It isn’t every day Martha Stewart, the Queen of Style and Do It Yourself, gives you a nationwide thumbs up, but it has happened to a local business in Old Town Cape. Sloan + Themis, the fashionable vintage inspired jewelry store in downtown Cape Girardeau, was chosen this month as a nominee in Martha Stewart’s American Made contest. Sloan + Themis didn’t win the national contest, but just being nominated is an honor. Really, it is. Thousands of American entrepreneurs vied for recognition, but only a few hundred got the Stewart nod. Shop owner and jewelry designer, Claire Bruce, says that Martha Stewart’s seal of approval is opening doors for her. “It’s cool to be a part of such a contest. It opens my shop up to the American Made buyer.”
Claire is a petite dynamo with the loveliest southern accent; she personifies style and creativity. Since 2011, she has created and sold her jewelry, first online and now also in the cutest jewelry box of a shop on Cape’s Main Street just a block from the Mississippi River. Sloan + Themis is located where Tony’s Jewelry used to be in the 1950’s, 60’s and 70’s. Claire says she has people walk in and reminisce about buying their class rings there. “I love the good aura this location brings and being part of Cape’s downtown history. Being part of downtown inspires me.” Inspiration also comes from museums, reading about decorative arts, and from local antique shops. Those inspirations and how the material feels guide her unique designs.
Most of Sloan + Themis' local sales are custom made items. Claire loves taking a client’s vintage jewelry and bringing it to life in a new, yet timeless and classic way. But she cares about more than just the beauty of a piece of jewelry. “It has to function well; clasps work properly, it’s the right length, the right size or it will not be worn.” She says, “Practical and beautiful stand the test of time.” It’s that American made handcrafted attention to detail that caught Martha Stewart’s attention.
In October, Claire will begin showcasing special holiday pieces each week leading up to Christmas. I can’t wait to see what she has created. If you’ve not visited Sloan + Themis in person and/or online, now is the time. Claire will work with you to make sure that your purchase not only looks great, but is also practical for the way you live. Sloan + Themis is open Wednesday through Saturday from 11:00am to 5:30pm.
