I checked out the new market in downtown Cape Girardeau last Saturday morning and found it quite enjoyable. While many of the vendors were sold out due to a larger than expected turnout everyone seemed to enjoy the concept and were excited about the future. The vendors included some local farmers with a variety of produce like radishes and walnuts as well as craft vendors and the kid’s favorite, face painters.
A couple young men provided entertainment in the form of drumming on trash cans (click here for a video) and the Kaufman family’s fresh cooked homemade donuts were a big hit. I tried really hard to avoid the donut but my efforts were in vain when at last, just before leaving, I bought one and ate the whole thing, yum!
A couple of people questioned the lack of produce, but it is early in the season and there will be more produce in the future as the crops are harvested.
Parking was a little challenging as it was all on street and you may have to walk a block or two; you can consider that one of the extra health benefits of an outdoor market and the fresh, quality products you can buy.
There were a number of tables and chairs scattered around the lot provided courtesy of Bel-Air Grill.
One other aspect I enjoyed was seeing so many of the community coming together and visiting with each other. Truly a fun, relaxing morning!
