Reflection on another year passed meets celebration of a fresh year starting on New Year's Eve. This New Year's Eve promises a night peppered with opportunities to say goodbye 2014 and hello 2015. From your favorite band at your favorite bar to benefits for worthy organizations, you won't have to go far to join in the festivities.
An annual event held to benefit St. Jude Children's Research Hospital is one of many celebrations you can partake in. The event features a catered meal by Ray's, drinks, live music by Mike Renick Band, raffles throughout the evening, and a champagne toast at midnight. The event is held at Ray's Banquet Center in Cape, and tickets are currently on sale individual as well as for tables of eight. They are available at Concepts Styling Salon in Cape, The Shop in Benton, or online (tables or individual). (The online links take you to PayPal operated by the American Lebanese Syrian Charities, INC, which is the fundraising department of St. Jude.) Tickets tend to go fast, so reserve your spot today.
If you would like to relish in tradition, join Ste. Genevieve's La Guiannée, a centuries-old French tradition evolved from wandering revelers singing a beggar's song for favors. In more modern celebrations, the event is akin to caroling and feasting with friends and neighbors as members of the community dressed in appropriate festival attire grace the streets, cafes and pubs of the town's historic district while singing the traditional song. (See a performance of the traditional La Guiannée song performed by Dennis & Jennifer Stroughmatt of Southern Illinois here.) The celebration in Ste. Genevieve is one of very few La Guiannée observances remaining in the United States. A similar La Guiannée festival also takes place in Prairie du Rocher, IL.
Another option might just help you start one of your resolutions early. EPIC is hosting their 1st Annual Glow 5K on New Year's Eve. The event encourages participants to wear glowing materials and raise funds for youth substance abuse prevention.
An event popular in recent years was the Live United (United Way) New Year's Eve Celebration. That event unfortunately will not be taking place this year.
While many bands will be playing at venues all across the region, we encourage you to support those who support us. Several of our supporters have great entertainment lined up:
- Rhymer's on the Plaza is having Shades of Soul, a champagne toast, and giveaways throughout the evening.
- Katy O'Ferrell's is having a Masquerade Party with DJs, drink specials, and a champagne toast.
- Isle Casino has a DJ in the promotions area, and Bittersweet (4pm to 8pm) and Push the Limit (beginning at 8:30pm) at The Lone Wolf.
- Rude Dog Pub is having The Late Rounders.
- Cape VFW is having a New Year's Eve Party with Common Thread with a champagne toast, snacks, shuttle service, and breakfast. (Both members and non-members are welcome to attend!)
- Whiskey River has Outlaw Crazy Band.
As you consider your choices for celebrating the New Year out on the town, we ask you to choose a locally owned venue or a local band to celebrate with. Check out the seasonal calendar below for a complete lineup of New Year's Eve Events.
