Couple Climbs Mt. Kilimanjaro

A former Farmington couple has taken one of the most adventurous vacations in the world. Joe and Tracy McMillen spent 10 days in Africa, where they climbed Mount Kilimanjaro, the tallest mountain on the continent. They started the climb on Christmas Day, and rang in the New Year at the top, watching the sun rise over the clouds at 19,341 feet above sea level on January 2. The McMillen’s made the climb with 14 other hikers, and some local guides. They said that one of the best parts of the trip was bonding with their fellow climbers, and learning about the Tanzania culture. The 10-day climb called for hikes up to 7 miles a day, with shallow breathing, and altitude sickness, but Joe says it was worth it. The adventurous couple, who now live in New York, have climbed the world’s largest free-standing mountain, but they aren’t stopping there. In 2012 they ran with the bulls in Pamplona, Spain, and next time they’re thinking of traveling to Iceland to see the Northern Lights. After each adventure, it’s always the same problem, “. . . the only question is, ‘what is the next adventure?’ With us, you can never tell.”
