Civil War Educational Panel at the Common Pleas Courthouse

Cape Girardeau will dedicate a Civil War educational panel on Tuesday, January 27, 2015 at 11:30 A.M. at the bottom of the stairs leading to the Old Common Pleas Courthouse on Spanish Street in historic downtown Cape Girardeau.

The panel, co-sponsored by the Cape Girardeau Convention and Visitors Bureau and the Missouri History Museum, has been erected on the grounds of the historic Common Pleas Courthouse in downtown Cape Girardeau, at Spanish and Themis Streets.

The date of the dedication ceremony coincides with the anniversary of President Abraham Lincoln’s General War Order No. 1, which he issued on January 27, 1862.  The order was Lincoln’s effort to mobilize the land and sea forces of the United States to advance against Confederate forces on many fronts.  The Order required that Union troops move by Washington’s Birthday, February 22, 1862.

Cape Girardeau’s new Civil War panel is part of program instituted by Missouri’s Civil War Heritage Foundation in 2006, to mark important sites along the foundation’s tourism-oriented driving trails.  Cape Girardeau joined the U. S Grant Trail™ in 2014.  This is the City’s most recent initiative to showcase its Civil War history, which includes a battle fought within the city limits in 1863 and ‘Fort D,” an earthwork commanding the Mississippi River that survives from Grant’s days.

Chuck Martin, Executive Director of the Cape Girardeau Convention and Visitors Bureau, noted that the City is proud of its Civil War history and heritage, as well as its wealth of other historic and cultural attractions. “Cape Girardeau, with more than 850 hotel rooms, more than 120 restaurants, and more than 500 shops and stores, is the perfect jumping off point for travelers interested in exploring the Civil War in Missouri, and points south,” according to Martin.  “The U. S. Grant Trail is a great complement to our already existing efforts and driving materials,” he added.

Tuesday’s dedication ceremony is open to the general public, which is encouraged to attend.
