Young Artist Makes Illustrations for Children’s Book

While most high school students are working part time, Alicia Boyer, of Farmington, got a lucky break when her grandmother’s doctor, Paul Moniz, invited her to do the illustrations for his latest children’s book. Moniz specializes in child-friendly books that teach readers about the human body. After her grandmother bragged about Boyer’s skills, Moniz invited the 17-year-old to draw a character he had in mind, “I had in my mind what I thought this character should look like,” Moniz said. “After I pitched my story, she went and drew first character in, like, ten minutes. She nailed it. It was exactly what I was thinking.” Boyer is now helping Moniz with a whole series of books including Kicking Ash about the dangers of cigarettes, and Courage and the Creepy Cancer. Boyer says she wants to do right by the characters, one of whom is based off a real patient, and is taking her time to make sure the art is of high quality. Still a junior in high school, Boyer hopes to attend an art college and become an animator.
