Marchers Remember Selma

Though it was cold, and snow still covered the ground last Tuesday, over 30 people showed up to participate in a memorial march through Carbondale to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Selma March and Voting Rights Act of 1965. The group marched for about a mile-and-a-half to the Carbondale Civic Center, chanting, singing, and receiving honks and waves of support from passing drivers. Vicente Dozier, on of the marchers, said the walk would remind people of what others have done to ensure the rights enjoyed today and motivate a new generation to continue the struggle. Once they reached the end of the route a speech was delivered by Carbondale Acting Mayor Don Monty who encouraged the marchers and others in the community to exercise their right as citizens to vote.
