The Human Library

The Carbondale Library is, of course, full of books for people to check out, but last weekend they took a different approach by creating a ‘human library’, where visitors could check out a person and ask questions about their life. Each person fell under a certain ‘genre’ including new mothers, veterans, and those that have been to jail. The library wanted people to experience living stories to gain a better understanding of different people and break down stereotypes often associated with them. Participants wore shirts that said “I’m a Living Book @ The Human Library” and sat at stations where people could sit and talk for about 20 minutes. This event was part of the library’s 11 Days of Compassion, which hosts events all through the end of March advocating non-violence. See what else is on the schedule at their website.
