A Community That Paints Together, Helps Together

At the First Friday art show in Downtown Cape last weekend patrons got the chance to not only admire the local art, but create some. Aaron Horrell set up a partially sketched drawing on canvas in his studio, and invited art-lovers to add their own artistic touch. For one dollar participates got one minute to paint whatever they wanted on the canvas. Soon the piece was filled with giant blue strawberries, a green dinosaur, and a red squirrel. The money Horrell raised goes to The Safe House for Women in Cape Girardeau, and he plans on hanging the painting, once it’s finished, in the shelter. He also had everyone who added to the painting sign their name to a list. He wanted those that need to shelter to see that they are supported. “I want them to know that not everybody is a bastard,” Horrell said.  He estimates that the painting should be finished in another month, and plans on putting it to auction.
