The Perseid Meteor Shower Falls this Weekend

Make a wish, the Perseid Meteor Shower is scheduled to fall through the Northern Hemisphere this weekend, August 9 - 13, with the peak viewing time to be the night of August 12 (morning August 13). With hopes that the weather will be clear residents of Southeast Missouri and Southern Illinois should be able to see this annual shower with the naked eye. Named for the constellation Perseus, from which they appear to fall, the Perseid Meteors are debris that fall from the Swift-Tuttle comet as it nears the sun.

St. Francois State Park in Bonne Terre will be holding a viewing party on August 15 for this special occasion. They predict that the meteors will fall at a rate of 50-75 meteors per hour, which makes it one of the best interstellar shows in our sky.

Take a trip away from city lights to get optimal viewing of this unique experience. With all these falling ‘stars’ there will be plenty of wishes to go around.
