New Roundabout Coming to Cape

The intersection of Independence Street and Gordonville Road in Cape Girardeau will be turned into a roundabout later this year. This high-traffic area next to Arena Park is currently a four-way stop. Officials say that a roundabout will smooth traffic flow and decrease congestion. While expensive, roundabouts are proven to be more efficient than traffic lights, and the city has decided that the cost is worth the convenience. Roundabout construction will cost $600,000 - 80% of which will be covered by the Missouri Department of Transportation. This is a steep comparison to the $250,000 it would cost for a traffic light, however officials say that roundabouts require less maintenance and reduce traffic collisions, which will make up for the extra cost. The National Guard Armory, which sits next to the intersection, will receive a new parking lot during construction since the roundabout will extend onto the armory’s site.

Officials hope to have construction started in May, and completed in September before the SEMO District Fair begins.
