30th Annual Eighth Congressional District High School Art Competition

Friday, May 6, from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m., the Southeast Missouri Arts Council invites you to attend a reception for the 30th Annual Eighth Congressional District High School Art Competition, hosted by Jason Smith, Congressman of the Eighth Congressional District. This much-loved exhibit, which features visual art pieces by high school-aged students living within the Eighth Congressional District in Missouri, will be on display until May 28.

Introduced in the year 1982, the Congressional High School Art Competition was developed by the Congressional Institute as a way to recognize and encourage artistic talent in the nation, and in each individual congressional district. Students submit entries to their representative’s office, and panels of local artists in each district select the winning entries, which are then displayed for one year at the Capitol in Washington, D.C.

This year, the Grand Prize winner will receive an award, and two ticket vouchers from Southwest Airlines to attend the reception for the National Congressional Art Competition in Washington, D.C. Ten finalists will also be named at the reception for the event on Friday, May 6.

Light appetizers will be provided during the reception. Wine will also be available for guests.

Join arts patrons and supporters in viewing the 2016 Eighth Congressional District High School Art Competition next Friday at the Arts Council Galleries. Members of the Visual Arts Cooperative will also feature new works in the Jean A. Chapman Gallery of the Arts Council of Southeast Missouri, which is located at 32 North Main Street in Cape Girardeau, MO. The gallery is also open Tuesday- Saturday, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
