Garlic Scapes Video Shows Fun Side of Local Farming

Laughing Stalk Farmstead is living up to their name with a new parody video based on ‘Thrift Shop’ by Macklemore. This goofy music video switches up the lyrics to talk about growing organically, the difficulties of farming, and cooking with garlic scapes! Several local residents volunteered for the music video.

Garlic scapes are the green, curly tops of the garlic plant. Their flavor is the similar to garlic cloves though a bit more mild. They can be chopped and used just as one would garlic but are a bit more versatile. They make a delicious pesto, can be simply grilled, or even shaved onto a pizza among a myriad of other uses.

Laughing Stalk Farmstead will be selling garlic scapes at the Cape Riverfront Market (35 S. Spanish St. in downtown Cape Girardeau) for the next few Saturdays from 8 a.m. - noon. They store well in the fridge but can also be frozen, pickled, or fermented.

Laughing Stalk Farmstead is a small, local vegetable farm organically growing around 2 acres of vegetables for the farmer's markets in Cape Girardeau. They are located just 8 miles north of downtown Cape and operated by Emily Scifers and Ross Peterson. They enjoy farming and, more importantly, laughing.
