Cape Girardeau – United Way of Southeast Missouri invites everyone in the community to celebrate the success of the 2016 annual Community Drive on Thursday, April 13, from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Jackson Civic Center.

The event not only celebrates the funds raised to strengthen SoutheastMissouri, but also acknowledges the many donors and volunteers who went above and beyond during the 2016 campaign.

Kristin Funderburk, Community Relations Manager, said, “Being a staff of three, we are especially dependent on our volunteers, donors, and corporate investors who help strengthen our community in so many ways. Whether they’re giving of their time, talent or treasure we appreciate everything they do for United Way. This is our opportunity to thank them publicly and give them some well-deserved recognition.”

The celebration will include award presentations, announcements of Step Up prizes and winners (those who donated for the first time or increased their giving by $1 per week), recognition of the Top 20 workplaces that helped raise a significant portion of the funds, and a brief testimonial from an individual whose life has been impacted by the collaborative efforts of United Way and its partner agencies.

According to Elizabeth Shelton, Executive Director of United Way of Southeast Missouri, the event promises to be a lot of fun. Shelton explains, “We have created a very fun way to deliver our Step-Up prizes that area businesses generously donate, and we have an interactive game planned, too, that helps demonstrate our impact. We think our volunteers and donors will leave feeling very good about the work they are helping us do in Southeast Missouri.”

The recognition awards include the Fran Rediger Award of Excellence, presented to a Read to Succeed volunteer who has done an outstanding job working with students in the program; Ambassador and Volunteer of the Year given to individuals who have shown exemplary service to United Way; the new FUNdraiser Award, which recognizes an event hosted by an organization that puts the fun in fundraising; the Spirit of Partnership awarded to a business that goes above and beyond to carry out the United Way mission; the Spirit of Community Award given to a business that shows exceptional dedication to promoting the impact of United Way throughout the community; and the Newcomer award that recognizes a business that recently began supporting United Way through workplace giving.
