Dr. Carson brings a common sense approach to the challenges individuals face on a daily basis by sharing his own inspirational story. It was education and determination that brought Dr. Carson from a life of poverty to becoming one of the nation’s foremost physicians. In his life story “Gifted Hands: The Ben Carson Story” which was later made into a movie starring Cuba Gooding Jr. Carson described his early struggled with education. His mother, with only a third grade education, challenged Carson and his brother to strive for excellence. Once he earned his medical degree he went to John Hopkins Children’s Center and directed neurosurgery for over a quarter of a century. One of his career highlights include the first separation of Siamese twins joined at the back of the head in 1987. He currently holds more than 60 honorary degrees, in 2001 was named by CNN and TIME Magazine as one of the nation’s 20 foremost physicians and scientists and that same year was selected by the Library of Congress as one of 89 “Living Legends”
