Roller Girls Begin Fifth Season

Cape Girardeau, Mo.—The Cape Girardeau Roller Girls (CGRG) open their fifth season February 22nd with the traditional intra-league opening mash-up that has become a fan favorite. The skaters are pitted against one another with a sprinkling of guest skaters from Southern Illinois Roller Girls (Marion IL), Arch Rival Roller Girls (St. Louis MO) , Queen City (Springfield MO), Red River Sirens (Clarksville TN), Midstate Mayhem (Decatur IL), the Clarksvillians (Clarksville TN), and Springfield Roller Girls (Springfield MO).

Team founder and president, Julie Moser (aka Sue Bob Fight), explains, “Historically, the friendly competition of the mash-up makes for an evenly matched game that is especially fun for the fans. This also gives our new skaters, aka Fresh Meat, an opportunity to bout for the first time without the pressure of competing against another league.”

For the first time in their history, the CGRG will open the season with a winning record, scoring 7 wins and 3 losses for the 2014 season. With even more home bouts scheduled this year, the athletes hope to maintain their winning record.

Because the team donates profits from each home bout to a local charity, they may also top the $5,000 donated last year. Special Olympics is the recipient of the first bout, and many team members participated in the Polar Plunge to raise additional funds. Other charities designated
as beneficiaries of the team’s good will this year include previous recipients, such as Cape Parks and Recreation and Southeast Hospice, as well as newcomer, the Southeast Council on the Arts.

The CGRG takes pride in providing a family-friendly atmosphere. After every bout the fans are invited down to the track for photos and autographs, and children are encouraged to jump into the team photo.

All home bouts are held at the A.C. Brase Arena. Discounted tickets can be purchased in advance at Pitter’s Café, PMac Music and from any roller girl for $7 or online at; tickets can be purchased for $9 at the door the night of the bout.

The CGRG will also be holding an informational meeting for any parties interested in becoming part of roller derby the Monday following their season opener. Roller Derby Recruitment will be held on Monday February 24th from 6:00pm to 7:00pm at the AC Brase Arena Building. Anyone interested in joining as a skater, official, or volunteer are encouraged to come out to learn what it takes.
