Orchestra to Present ‘Piano Spectacular’ Concert

CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo., Feb. 24, 2014 -- The Southeast Missouri Symphony Orchestra will present a concert entitled “Piano Spectacular,” with featured Russian virtuoso pianist, Valentina Igoshina, March 11, in the Donald C. Bedell Performance Hall on the River Campus of Southeast Missouri State University.

The concert is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. Music to be performed at the concert will be Beethoven’s evocative “Pastoral” Symphony, and Grieg’s appealing “Piano Concerto in A Minor.”

The concert will open with Ludwig van Beethoven’s famous “Pastoral” Symphony No. 6. Written at the height of Beethoven’s heroic “Middle Period,” this symphony is an evocation of the countryside and nature. Beethoven frequently sought solace and inspiration in the woods and countryside surrounding Vienna, and this beautiful symphony is full of the scents and sounds of nature. Beethoven gives subtitles to each of the movements of the symphony, beginning with movement one (“Pleasant feelings awakened on arriving in the countryside”) and continuing through a rustic peasant dance (“Happy gathering of country folk”) and an ominous storm (“Thunderstorm”). When the storm is over, a sense of relief and thanksgiving is expressed in the concluding movement (“Shepherds’ song: cheerful and thankful feelings after the storm”).

The second half of the concert will feature music by the great Norwegian Romantic composer, Edvard Grieg. The orchestra will perform selected movements from Grieg’s beloved “Peer Gynt Suite,” including the famous movement, “In the Hall of the Mountain King.”

For the remainder of the concert, the symphony will be joined by piano virtuoso, Igoshina, in performing one of the great masterpieces for piano and orchestra, Grieg’s “Piano Concerto in A Minor.” Written in 1868, this work is in three movements, with a dramatic first movement, a lyrical and gentle middle movement, and an energetic, vibrant last movement. Grieg’s writing for both the piano soloist and for the accompanying symphony orchestra is thrilling and exciting, and has generated lasting popularity for this concerto.

Igoshina has received rave reviews and performed to critical acclaim in Europe and the United States. She graduated from the famous Tchaikovsky Conservatory in Moscow, where she studied under Larissa Dedova and Sergei Dorensky. Valentina Igoshina has won prizes at numerous international competitions, including the Rubinstein Competition in Poland in 1993 (First Prize), the Sergeii Rachmaninov International Piano Competition in Moscow in 1997 (First Prize), the Atlanta International Piano Competition (Second Prize), the Queen Elizabeth International Competition in Brussels in 2003 (finalist) and the José Iturbi International Piano Competition in Valencia (Spain) in 2006 (Second prize).

Igoshina has given recitals throughout Europe and the United States. She has performed with the Halle Orchestra and the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra in the United Kingdom and the Concertgebouw Royal Orchestra in Amsterdam. Recent concert engagements include performances with the Barcelona Symphony Orchestra, the Santiago Chile Orchestra, the Galicia Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, the Polish National Radio Symphony Orchestra and the Brandenburg Symphony Orchestra as well as recitals in France, Poland, Hungary, Chile, Luxembourg, China and the United States.

Igoshina released her first recording (Mussorgsky’s “Pictures at an Exhibition and Schumann’s Carnival”) with Warner Classics International in 2005 and her second CD was released in July 2008 by Lontano (distributed by Warner Classics International). She has also performed on live broadcasts by the BBC and Classic FM in the United Kingdom and can be seen and heard playing pieces by Rachmaninov and Chopin in films released commercially on DVD.

Sara Edgerton of Southeast’s Department of Music will direct the concert.
