Since 2007, the Miss Country Days Queen Scholarship & Character Pageant has grown into one of the region’s premier opportunities for personal development for high school women.

According to Jessica Hampton, pageant director, many of the young women who have participated would not have had the opportunity without the encouragement of their sponsors, local businesses who saw their talent and encouraged them to participate.

“We have so much raw talent among the young women in our community, but often times, they don’t see it in themselves,” Hampton said. “Sometimes, it takes a boss, co-worker, teacher or mentor to help one of the ladies realize they can participate and be successful.”

Hampton said that the long term effects among participants in the pageant have been tremendous.

“In the seven years of the pageant, I’ve heard from many of the ladies that they found college interviews, job interviews and other challenging communication situations so much easier because of the experiences of the pageant,” Hampton said. “Not to mention the amazing relationships they took with them.”

“Before, I entered the pageant I was afraid and didn’t think it was something I would want to do,” said Tiffany Stricklin, a 2010 contestant.

“I thought you had to be 'girly” and “perfectly fit,” and I was neither of the two,” she said, “As the months progressed along, I felt myself growing in small ways that I didn’t notice then but fully notice now.”

Stricklin said that the experience of reaching out to local businesses and handling difficult impromptu questions has helped both in sales positions, college interviews and her future career as an elementary teacher.

Open to high school junior and senior women, the pageant process offers the opportunity to develop grace, confidence, poise, networking and professional skills. The pageant also provides thousands of dollars in scholarships and prizes annually.

“Participation in the Miss Country Days Queen Scholarship & Character Pageant is a real privilege,” Hampton said. Only women who desire to actively elevate their character and poise should consider taking part.”

“We appreciate the contestant sponsors who make the pageant possible, but just as much, we appreciate those businesses who encourage young women to take a major step by participating,” Hampton said.

Candidates must actively participate in all scheduled activities for contestants, which include personal development activities, raising funds for the program scholarships, and pageant rehearsals.

The pageant is open to high school juniors or seniors scheduled for 2014 or 2015 graduation, enrolled in a St. Francois County school, who exhibits scholastic excellence and community involvement. Additional eligibility guidelines and the application are available at
