Southeast Recognized with Top Honors at PBL National Conference


July 1, 2014 – Southeast Missouri State University students brought home national awards from the Future Business Leaders of America-Phi Beta Lambda (FBLA-PBL) National Leadership Conference June 23-26 in Nashville, Tenn.

The Zeta Alpha Lambda Chapter from Southeast sent 12 students to compete in 16 events. Under the guidance and direction of Dr. Alisha Ortiz and Dr. Dana Schwieger. These students brought home nine national awards.

  • Chris Dzurick (marketing management major from Fulton, Mo.) earned fifth place in Future Business Executive, which is one of the two highest awards in PBL.
  • Amber Joiner (computer graphics major from Sparta, Ill.) earned first place in Desktop Publishing and seventh place in Website Design.
  • Cory Herzog (business management major from Farmington, Mo.) earned fifth place in Contemporary Sports Issues.
  • Caitlin Schamburg (accounting major from Perryville, Mo.) earned fourth place and Justin Bader (accounting major from Jackson, Mo.) earned seventh place in Financial Concepts.
  • Brooke Dial (accounting major from Sikeston, Mo.) earned 10th place in Justice Administration.
  • Malli Tahghighi (accounting major from St. Louis, Mo.), Bader, and Josh James (marketing management major from Jackson, Mo.) earned ninth place in Management Analysis and Decision Making.
  • Schamburg earned fourth place in Management Concepts.

These awards were part of a comprehensive competitive events program sponsored by FBLA-PBL. Individuals, state teams and local chapters were encouraged to compete in a range of career and business related areas. The winners of these highly competitive and prestigious awards were selected from among FBLA-PBL’s student membership that represents thousands of the best and brightest of today’s youth.

Southeast Missouri State University’s Zeta Alpha Lambda chapter was awarded ninth place for Local Chapter Annual Report. The annual report, known as the Hamden L. Forkner Award, recognizes chapters that effectively summarize their year’s activities. The event provides participants with valuable experience in preparing business reports.

The chapter also received the Gold Seal Chapter Award of Merit, known as the Hollis and Kitty Guy GOLD Seal Chapter Award, which recognizes outstanding local chapters that have actively participated in projects and programs identified with the goals of FBLA-PBL.

Of 20 National Leadership Conference National Scholarships, three were awarded to Southeast students: Bader, James and Joiner.

In addition, Malli Tahghighi was named to Who’s Who in PBL.

Other Zeta Alpha Lambda Chapter members from Southeast who participated in the conference were Tyler Rosemann, an accounting major from Troy, Mo.; Emily Karleskint, an athletic training major from Jackson, Mo.; Bijan Tahghighi, a business management major from St. Louis, Mo.; and Matthew Reishman, a computer information systems major from Ballwin, Mo.
