Internet Neutrality Focus of Many Organizations

A new FCC (Federal Communications Commission) proposal has internet neutrality in the spotlight. The proposal would ban broadband providers from blocking or slowing down specific websites but open the door for content companies to pay for special access to consumers, such as faster lanes. This in turn would provide a priority of sorts to those paying the premium for the faster access.

The proposal is being opposed by both organizations and companies that seek to make all sites equally entitled. "Consumers, not broadband gatekeepers, should pick the winners and losers on the Internet," a Netflix spokesman said. "Strong net neutrality rules are needed to stop Internet service providers from demanding extra fees or slowing delivery of content to consumers who already have paid for Internet access."
