Union County in Illinois Receives Next Generation 911

Many rural counties in the Missouri and Illinois region still struggle with the lack of 911 access. In fact just the ability to dial 911 is a new concept for most places, and with the appearance of smartphones the ability to track and locate a caller is still a much-needed update. In Union County they are receiving the latest improvement to the 911 system – NG-911. Not only can a caller be located, but text messages, and live streaming video can be sent to 911 services.

Jana Fear, the Union County 911 Coordinator says, “We don’t live in a world of just voice communication anymore. The way we communicate is constantly evolving thanks to new technology and this is an opportunity for emergency services to catch up.”

This update is a great success in the evolution of 911 services, and will create a safer environment in places that would otherwise be remote or out of reach. Other counties are following suit as well, with Hamilton County approving 911 Enhancement. Hopefully this will continue to make waves to make other areas safe as well.
