New Product to Protect Children in Public Schools

Child safety in public schools is a growing issue, and one local family is facing it head-on with a new product invented to secure classrooms in the event of an intruder. Ruth Ann Orr, principle of Alma Schrader Elementary School saw the need for extra security after the tragedy of the Sandy Hook shooting.

Orr and her family designed the CORR Lock, a magnetic device that goes between a door and its frame. When removed the CORR Lock allows the door latch to fall into place, locking the classroom. This technique is efficient, quick, and easy to use. Even the first graders have been trained on how to use it in case of an emergency. With the CORR Lock a door doesn’t have to be opened or locked manually with keys, this saves a lot of time, which can be crucial.

Orr’s family all pitched in with the creation of CORR Lock. Her husband, Kevin, is a sergeant with the Cape Girardeau Police Department; their daughter, Meghan Anderson is graphic designer; and Meghan's husband, Cory Anderson is an Army veteran. They want to donate CORR Locks to all Cape Girardeau schools.
