River Campus to Hold Children Auditions for 'The King and I'

The Southeast Missouri State University River Campus will hold auditions for children wishing to sing, dance, and perform as part of the spring production. The auditions will be from 4-6pm on December 2, and callbacks will be from 6-10pm. They will take place at the Wendy Kurka Rust Flexible Theater at the River Campus.

Many children ages 6 through 8th grade are needed to fill roles of the King's children, and the roles are of an ensemble nature. Two additional roles will be cast for boys ages 11-13 for the King's son and Anna's son. The two roles require actors to use an Asian or British accent, respectively. Those selected for any role will be required to attend some or all of the rehearsals.

The play is set in 1862 in exotic Siam where English widow Anna Leonowens, and her young son arrive at the Royal Palace in Bangkok, having been summoned by the King to serve as a tutor to his many wives and children. With both keeping a firm grip on their respective traditions and values, Leonowens and the King grow to understand and respect one another in a truly unique love story in the grand style of Rodgers and Hammerstein. Themes the play addresses include cultural issues, life transitions, respect, love and cooperation.

Additional information is available from the Southeast Missouri State University News Bureau, including information about preparing for the auditions.
