Sensitive Santa to Visit Autistic Children

Visiting Santa Clause at the mall can be one of the funniest and most treasured memories for a parent and child, but for some children who suffer from autism the experience can be frightening and stressful. Children with autism can be stressed out by the long lines, loud noises, and bright lights. Shy kids are often hesitant when meeting Santa, but for those with autism it can be even worse. Autism organizations are working to spread ‘Sensitive Santa’, a safe and fun way for autistic kids to meet St. Nick.

The Autism Society of Southern Illinois is teaming up with area businesses to bring Sensitive Santa to the area. With Sensitive Santa all visits are by appointment, so there aren’t long lines to wait in, toys and a quiet waiting area are provided, and Santa is played by a therapist who understands how to interact with the kids.

Santa will be visiting the area on November 29. This is by appointment only, so call (618) 319-3303 to set up a time.
