Local Woman Starts Music Academy in Small Town

Some might say Emily Parker was born with music in her genes. When she was 3 years old Emily started playing piano, taught by her grandmother, who used to babysit while giving piano lessons. Emily stuck with music for the rest of her life, majoring in Vocal Music Education with a degree from the University of Missouri-Columbia, followed by a Master’s in piano pedagogy from Northwestern University in Chicago. She and her husband had prestigious careers in Chicago, but when Emily had their first child they decided to move back to Emily’s hometown of Ironton, MO. It was there that Emily and Brian discovered the Ironton Lodge Hall at 133 N. Main St. Unused since the 1990’s, and on the verge of demolition, the Ironton Lodge Hall would prove to be a challenge. The Parkers purchased the building in 2012, and began restoring it with a specific goal in mind: bring music to Ironton. Two years later the building is now on the historical registry, with new plumbing, solar panels, and a new purpose: Emily’s very own Arcadian Academy of Music. Complete with offices, classrooms, and a recital hall, Emily’s goal to bring quality musical education to her small town is well underway.
