Local Artist Commissioned for Time Magazine

A local Ste. Genevieve artist got some national recognition when she was asked to do artwork for Time Magazine’s person of the year nominee Taylor Swift. Ali Cavanaugh was contacted by a Time art director to create a painting of Taylor Swift, ready for when the polls ended. While Taylor Swift did not win person of the year, Cavanaugh was not deterred, “More than anything, it’s the bragging rights. Time knows who I am. They called me up. I can’t believe that.”

A stay-at-home mom, Cavanaugh dedicates her free time to art, showing work in galleries as far as South Carolina and Texas. She also provides work for art and design blogs, her online presence helped the art director discover and select her for the piece.

Since the winner is announced when the publication is released all artwork is done in advance. Cavanaugh, in her excitement, worked for nearly 60 hours on the painting from November 28 to December 2. The announcement was made December 10, and while the Ebola Doctors earned the honor this year, Cavanaugh received a commission, and a mention that her piece might be used for a later project. She is currently working on 30 pieces for a couple of solo exhibitions out-of-state next year.
