SOLOS to Hold Fundraiser for Big Change

Jennifer Cagle-Huffman, the founder of SOLOS, is holding a big fundraiser this Saturday, offering delicious food, live music, and lots of fun.

After losing her mother to suicide in 1998, Jennifer sought to provide support for others who face the same burden. SOLOS started as an online service, and has expanded into a world-wide community of over 13,000 people. “My mom died by suicide seventeen years ago, I spent seven feeling utterly alone. A lot of people don’t understand, they say ‘move on, get over it,’ but this is a grief you never really get over. I don’t want people to ever feel alone.”

Jennifer says that there are some countries where survivors can’t talk about their grief, and SOLOS provides that outreach and connects them with others. SOLOS currently offers five face-to-face support groups for those that have lost loved ones to suicide. Currently she pays for these out-of-pocket, “The funding that is received through fundraising and grants is used to educate local facilitators for face-to-face groups. We are currently waiting to send ten new facilitators for training through AFSP."

With the help of Chelsea Morgan - the fundraiser organizer - Jennifer is making progress in expanding SOLOS to everyone who needs them. The fundraiser will be held at Shocks Pub in Scott City. For only $15 patrons can enjoy catering from Wild Hogs Smokehouse, live music by The Jimmy Lee Band, and a silent auction. All proceeds help SOLOS continue to give support to those grieving over the loss of a loved one by providing online support, educational tools, and training of facilitators for local groups.

“SOLOS has been a real blessing for me,” Jennifer said, “this cause is so important. One hundred and fifteen people are directly or indirectly affected by suicide, and this program is very much needed. No one else provides free services like this in the area.”

Jennifer expressed her excitement for the fundraiser, and looks forward to seeing everyone there. The fundraiser takes place August 22 at 6:00 p.m. Shocks Pub is located at 116 E Hickory Street in Scott City.
