Sunny Hill Blossoms for Spring

Sunny Hill Garden and Florist 2016The groundhog predicted an early spring coming our way, so it’s time to prepare for gardening. Sunny Hill Gardens and Florist in Cape Girardeau has been the local shop for all gardening needs for over 90 years, and they’re ready to help everyone get out in the sun, breath fresh air, and get your hands dirty.

Sunny Hill is Cape’s local garden shop and florist, owned and run by Paul Schnare who purchased the business in 1992. Paul has spent his entire life in the gardening business, from running a lawn care service in the 1970s, to the creation of Accu-grow. He now puts his knowledge toward helping the locals of Southeast Missouri and Southern Illinois with all their gardening needs.

Sunny Hill strives to be a one-stop shop by providing landscape design and installation, including irrigation and chemical lawn care. They offer a huge variety of seeds and plants, including vegetables. There are also plenty of garden accessories including memorial stones, and items for fairy gardens.

“We also have a florist for flower arrangements,” says Paul, “Last week we had orders for corsages for the father/daughter event.”

But for Paul the most important service he and his employees offer is personalized and expert service, “Our employees have been around for twenty, thirty, fifty years. They’re committed to the business and customers. The experience they have helps them solve any issues and questions customers may have . . . None of us are actual family members, but we have created a family here.”

While Sunny Hill can help even the most seasoned veterans, they also teach the basics to young gardeners as well. The first Saturday of every month they host an event called First Saturday Kids, where children can make crafts and learn all about garden basics.

“. . . We were looking for something to get young gardeners involved in gardening. We started First Saturday Kids to do a craft and Spring flowers bloom at Sunny Hillgardening activities. We get a very good turnout.”

Despite almost 100 years of tradition, Paul says Sunny Hill stays up to date with the latest and greatest in gardening techniques, “We’re always looking for new products and services that we can provide. That’s what we’re consistently looking for. There’s always new products, new varieties of plants, new ways of growing things, so that’s what we’re always working for, and bringing that to the public.”

Sunny Hill is located at 206 N. Kingshighway. Starting in March their hours will extend for the gardening season. Visit their website for more details.
