Motor Down the Mighty Mississippi

Motor Down the Mighty Mississippi

The 2013 Great Race, a time speed endurance rally for vintage cars, is coming to Cape Girardeau!  The race starts in St. Paul, Minnesota and weaves its way down the Mississippi River toward the Gulf of Mexico through 10 states. The race crosses the river a dozen times and finishes in Mobile, Alabama on June 30th.

The Great Race began 30 years ago, and it is not a "top speed" event, but a time/speed/distance rally.  The vehicles, each with a driver and a navigator are given precise instructions each day that detail every move down to the second. They are scored at secret checkpoints along the way and are penalized one second for each second either early or late.  The ultimate goal is to finish exactly on the targeted time.

The Great Race is an antique, vintage, and collector car (model years 1969 and earlier) competitive controlled-speed endurance road rally on public highways. The race spans 10 states and 2,100 miles over the course of nine days.

The 2013 course includes Missouri, with planned stops in Hannibal, Washington, and Cape Girardeau.  The stop in Cape Girardeau will be the last on Day 4 of the 9-day race.  Cape Girardeau will host an overnight stop on the 2013 Hemmings Motor News Great Race, presented by Hagerty on Tuesday, June 25th.   Cars will arrive in Cape Girardeau on June 25th after 5 p.m. at one minute intervals for more than an hour and a half, and will stay parked in downtown Cape Girardeau so that everyone can visit with the participants and check out the cars.

Businesses along the raceway, from the intersection of Kingshighway and Lexington Avenue, along Kingshighway to Broadway and then along Broadway to Main Street, will host "pit-stop parties." Vendors in downtown Cape Girardeau will host "welcoming parties." Best efforts will be given a spirit award by the CVB to display. Cape Girardeau also is competing against other stops for the best host city. There also will be a cruise-in for regional and local vintage cars, meaning hundreds of vintage cars will be parked along Main from Broadway to William.

Racers' arrival times at each city are unknown; check The Great Race website to keep up with the action.
